Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) vice-president Faruque Ahmed on Monday underscored the need for more playgrounds nationwide, describing sports infrastructure as central to sustaining the country’s athletic development following talks with State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque at the National Sports Council (NSC).

Representatives from 52 federations attended the nearly three-hour meeting at the NSC conference room, where officials exchanged views on development priorities and coordination. Speaking to reporters after the session, Faruque said increasing the number of playing fields was critical to long-term progress.

“We need more playing fields,” he said, adding that the minister had pledged support for expanding facilities and strengthening organised sports activities. “He assured us that he will assist in developing playgrounds and integrating sports more effectively. Sports will also be included in the curriculum, and there are sports teachers to facilitate that.”

Faruque commended Aminul — a former national football team captain — for setting out what he termed a clear and encouraging vision at the outset of the meeting.

“He is a sportsman and he began the meeting in a very impressive manner. He shared his vision with us,” Faruque said.

Although he welcomed the inclusive format, Faruque suggested that future consultations could be more productive if held in smaller groups to allow deeper discussion.

“Instead of such a large gathering, it would be more effective to arrange sessions with five federations at a time, which would enable more detailed exchanges and benefit everyone,” he said.

He added that separate discussions between the BCB and the minister remained an option, particularly to align implementation plans.

“Yes, individual meetings are possible. But if our action plans are aligned, it will be more convenient. Today’s meeting ran for about three hours. Had all federations spoken at length, it could have gone on for another four,” he said.
